In order to implement the instructions of the municipal leadership, on the afternoon of January 27, Executive Vice President of BAST SIMA Hong and her colleagues visited Pony.ai Ltd in Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area for a field survey of the history and current status of AI and self-driving cars. Deputy Director of the Area’s Management Committee Zhang Guang and members of Leading Party Members’ Group and vice presidents of BAST Tian Wen and Liu Xiaokan participated in the field survey.
VP of Pony AI Zhang Ning presented the latest developments of self-driving research and development. Pony.ai, founded in late 2016, has established partnerships with top-class carmakers both at home and abroad including Toyota, Hyundai, FAW and GAC thanks to its latest breakthroughs in the field of AI technology.
Zhang Guang said that self driving is the commanding height of scientific and technological competition among countries worldwide and also an important development direction of Beijing’s sophisticated industries. Beijing Economic and Technological Development Area will create five systems of “intelligent road, smart car, real-time cloud, reliable network and precise map”, complete the key technological and managerial processes of network-connected and cloud-controlled self-driving, form a city-level engineering test platform and realize commercialization of a series of application scenarios and promotion and application of a group of intermediate products.
SIMA Hong recognized the level of innovation-driven development of Pony.ai, pointing out that: firstly, BAST will join hands with the Area and other entities according to the related requirements of the municipal government to properly publicize and demonstrate cutting-edge self-driving technologies at the capital sci-tech achievements exhibition hall of Beijing Science Center by relying upon Pony.ai, sci-tech communities and other companies and social organizations; secondly, make full use of the platforms such as the lecture hall of science popularization, and plan and coordinate publicity efforts to increase public awareness of self driving and spark the scientific interests of teenagers in self-driving; thirdly, related learned societies are expected to participate in sci-tech innovation in the self-driving industry, promote the new development trends of the industry, facilitate cooperation among all parties along the industry chain and make renewed contributions to the construction of Beijing as an international sci-tech innovation center.
