Institution-school cooperation brokered by BAST Science popularization in Haidian District helps explore new approaches to “double reduction”

In order to leverage abundant resources of BAST, effectively support schools to provide after-school services, increase science literacy of students and help students grow healthily in all aspects, Haidian District Association for Science and Technology actively push local scientific research institutes to cooperate with primary and middle schools and help bring high-quality science popularization resources to campuses according to the Notice on Utilizing Science Popularization Resources to Boost “Double Reduction” Effort issued by the General Office of the Ministry of Education and the General Office of China Association for Science and Technology. On January 4, 2022, the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of CAS joined hands with Beijing 101 Middle School Education Group to start a program of bringing high-end technological resources to campus through science popularization, establish Haidian Science Popularization Education Base, science popularization campus workstation for fueling “double reduction” through “double advancement”, and to establish “Haidian template” of how science popularization resources empower “double reduction” effort. 

Driven by Haidian District Association for Science and Technology, the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of CAS and Beijing 101 Middle School Education Group will work together on bringing high-end scientific and technological resources to campuses, bringing middle school students into labs and high-quality teacher training program. The Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of CAS will transform its advantageous disciplines and cutting-edge technological achievements into a series of choice courses called “future technology” by “popularizing high-end scientific and technological resources”, which will be delivered by scientists in middle school classrooms. Meanwhile, by relying on its distinctive resources, the institute will design a highly interactive and participatory series of popular science experiments, have “science popularization ambassadors” bring them into campuses for demonstration to students, in addition to guiding capable students to participate in presentations and support science festivals of the school. Meanwhile, the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of CAS will organize “scientist spirit preaching group” to lead cultivation of talented people on campus with the innovative spirit of scientists and help live the dreams of making China a powerful country of science and technology.  

Both sides will cooperate on the “future scientists” cultivation program by providing theoretical method training, research process guidance and innovative thinking training to students using a training approach “doing scientific research in labs and growing up alongside scientists”, so as to make students more capable of analytic thinking and innovative experimentation, and cultivate innovation-minded “future scientists”. Moreover, both sides will jointly organize refresher training seminars for science literacy improvement of teachers each year to help teachers of Beijing 101 Middle School Education Group understand cutting-edge technologies, broaden their educational horizon and increase their teaching performance.  

Moreover, Haidian District Association for Science and Technology, the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of CAS and Beijing 101 Middle School Education Group will jointly create branded events of science communication like “Haidian Science Communication Week”, intensify publicity efforts, build up the distinctive image of Haidian as a “S&T blue ocean and fertile soil of innovation”, and make science communication efforts of Haidian District more influential. 

The Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of CAS is a research institute with physics, chemistry and engineering technology as disciplinary background and tasked with high technology innovation and achievements transformation research. Its main areas of research are photochemical conversion and functional materials, cryogenic science and engineering, functional crystal and laser technologies, bionic intelligent interface materials, specialty functional materials and biomedical technologies. The institute now has 1 national engineering research center, 1 national key lab, 6 key labs of CAS, 2 key labs of Beijing and several research centers and research groups. It now has 6 academicians, 268 research fellows and senior engineering technicians, and over 700 active doctoral students and postgraduates. It has abundant resources for popularization of high-end science and technology, 

Beijing 101 Middle School Education Group highly values quality education and aims at improving qualities of students in all aspects for holistic development of students. Especially in terms of science literacy and innovative thinking cultivation, the school offers a variety of science and technology courses including master mentoring, scientific investigation practice and aerospace selective, all well praised by students. The aerospace course is even so distinctive that Qian Xuesen class was established, partnership was established with China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, China Academy of Space Technology and China Academy of Aerospace Systems, as well as with Aerospace Dongfanghong Satellite Co., Ltd and China Center for Aerospace Science and Technology International Communications, aerospace science labs were established and 101 small satellites of popular science launched. Over the past year, Beijing 101 Middle School was rated as a national-level “demonstration school for new courses and new text books”, “national aerospace-featured school” and “future piloting school of aerospace”, with platforms established to help students pursue aerospace dreams, build up aerospace courses and have more, wider, deeper and closer exposure to aerospace technologies. The school is one of ten best schools at the first national science and technology innovative education contest, one of the first schools to be crowned as dual golden eagle sci-tech community in Beijing, and China’s first sub-base of elite cultivation middle school. The school’s students also won many awards at domestic and overseas competitions such as national teenager science & technology innovation competition, rewards for little scientists of tomorrow, Intel ISEF, International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, International Astronomy Olympiad and Model Aircraft World Championships.

Haidian District Association for Science and Technology, as a hub-like, platform-enabled and open organization, makes full use of its organizational advantages across industries and domains, actively pushes horizontal cooperation between scientific research institutes and schools, and sets up “bridges” between releasing high-quality science popularization resources and meeting the needs of teenagers’ science literacy cultivation. The cooperation between the institute and Beijing 101 Middle School Education Group started a rewarding attempt to support implementation of the “double reduction” policy, and provides a “development model” for empowering “double reduction” effort with science popularization resources.
