CAST holds panel discussion to shape future of international science communication empowered by AI

Co-sponsored by the Science and Technology Review Publishing House, the National Communication Center for Science and Technology (NCCST) affiliated with the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), and Science/AAAS, a panel discussion to shape the future of international science communication empowered by AI technology convened at the NCCST on October 15, 2024.

The event attracted 60 plus experts to participate in person and was live streamed on media platforms including the Voice of CAST (VOC), the Video Channels of the Science and Technology Review Publishing House and the Research journal, and the official Bilibili account of Science as well.

The event featured a high-level speech by Brian Lin, who has more than two decades of experience as a science communicator and oversees the EurekAlert!, a non-profit science news release distribution platform operated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Lin’s speech focused on the topic of international science communication in the AI era, discussing the development history of the EurekAlert! and its efforts in communicating science, and its achievements in cooperating with China as well. His speech sparked positive feedback from the attendees.

Chu Xiaoying, Director of International Collaboration & Partner Publishing at the Science/AAAS, along with Brian Lin, Liu Li, Director of the Academic Service Center at the ZhiPu AI, Liu Bing, Deputy Editor-in-Chief at the publishing house of the Chinese Medical Association (CMA), and Qiao Kunpeng, Director of Knowledge Management and Solutions at the Zhongtu Kexin, engaged in topics on how AI technology functions in transforming international science communication, improving communication efficiency, and recommending personalized contents to people.

The panel also addressed the risks and challenges brought by AI, including copyright, credibility, and ideology issues, calling upon science communicators to make continuous efforts to leverage AI technology to better communicate science.

The panel discussion was lively, and every participants expressed their ideas. Afterwards, the participants visited the National Museum for Modern Chinese Scientist located at the 3rd floor of the NCCST.

In 2018, the Science and Technology Review Publishing House affiliated with CAST joined hands with the AAAS to publish Research as the first journal of the Science Partner Journal (SPJ) program.

Based on the opportunity, the Science and Technology Review Publishing House signed a memorandum of cooperation with the AAAS in 2023 to jointly launch serial academic activities to strengthen people-to-people exchanges among young scholars of the two countries.

The panel discussion is one of the serial academic activities.
