Season 3 of the educational science program "Mr. Science" has started to air on Beijing Radio and Television Station (BRTV) every Tuesday at 21:05 since July 30, 2024. Each episode features a prominent Chinese scientist who imparts wisdom and experiences to a group of university and middle school students known as the "Future Team," fostering an engaging learning environment. Here are the stories of these distinguished scientists.
As a physicist, materials scientist, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and former president of Tsinghua University, Gu Binglin has played a pivotal role in shaping both his field and the futures of countless students. His contributions were recently highlighted in the education program “Mr. Science”, where he shared insights from his impactful career.
Throughout his journey, Gu has been a strong advocate for innovative educational practices. He believes that education should inspire creativity and practical skills, moving beyond mere tradition. During his presidency at Tsinghua, he emphasized the importance of balancing rigorous academic achievement with physical fitness. Embracing the university’s motto, “No sports, no Tsinghua,” he encouraged students to engage in daily exercise, reinforcing the idea that a healthy body supports a thriving mind. Even in his seventies, Gu remains active in sports, setting a great example for his students.
The filming coincided with Tsinghua University's 113th anniversary and its annual sports meet. As a respected elder of the university, Gu took the opportunity to reminisce about his student days and celebrate the vibrant spirit of alumni. A touching reunion with graduates from the class of 1970 demonstrated the enduring bonds formed within the academic environment and the warmth of teacher-student relationships.
Gu Binglin's dedication extends to his family life as well. His wife, Wu Yaru, shared how Gu meticulously recorded their experiences during her pregnancy, reflecting his thoughtfulness not only as a scientist but also as a devoted husband.
In the field of materials science, Gu is recognized as a pioneer of "materials design" in China. Prior to his advocacy, many Chinese scientists relied on cumbersome trial-and-error methods for material development. Gu’s emphasis on materials design has revolutionized the field, paving the way for significant technological advancements.
He emphasizes that materials design is essential for innovations, particularly in high-tech industries like aerospace, where advancements in materials can drive major breakthroughs. This perspective was validated by China’s remarkable achievements, such as the Chang’e 6 mission in June 2024, which marked humanity's first successfully sample return from the moon’s far side.
Gu's philosophy centers on long-term commitment and perseverance. He encourages researchers to embrace patience and diligence, as meaningful results often take time. This approach also informs his educational strategies. During his tenure, he cultivated a supportive atmosphere that fostered innovation while enhancing faculty quality by attracting top-tier scientists from around the world, including Yang Chen-Ning, Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, and Shing-Tung Yau, whose presence has greatly accelerated the development of fundamental science and technology in China.
A defining aspect of Gu's leadership is his ability to recognize and nurture talent. He identified the potential of emerging physicist Xue Qikun, inviting him to join Tsinghua University. Since then, Xue has achieved remarkable success, including being named the youngest recipient of the National Supreme Science and Technology Award in June 2024.
Even after retirement, Gu remains dedicated to nurturing future talent. He co-founded the Tengchong Scientist Forum with other esteemed scholars, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and communication in advancing scientific knowledge.
Gu's legacy is a testament to the profound impact that passionate individuals can have on society. Through his commitment to education and innovation in materials science, he continues to inspire the next generation of scholars and researchers, shaping the future of science in China and beyond.
