Editor's Notes:

Season 3 of the educational science program "Mr. Science" has started to air on Beijing Radio and Television Station (BRTV) every Tuesday at 21:05 since July 30, 2024. Each episode features a prominent Chinese scientist who imparts wisdom and experiences to a group of university and middle school students known as the "Future Team," fostering an engaging learning environment. Here are the stories of these distinguished scientists.

On April 24, 1970, China achieved a monumental milestone in its space history with the launch of the Dongfanghong-1 satellite aboard the Long March 1 rocket. This event marked China's entry into the space age, making it the fifth country capable of independently launching satellites. Accompanying the satellite was the stirring melody of "Dongfanghong (The East is Red)," which transcended the atmosphere, echoing into the vastness of space and showcasing the brilliance of China's space endeavors.

At the heart of this achievement was Chen Junliang, whose contributions, alongside numerous scientists and technicians, were pivotal in ensuring that the melody of "Dongfanghong" resonated in space. At the time of the mission, Chen was newly married but accepted the task associated with the satellite without hesitation. Initially unaware of the specifics, he soon realized he was responsible for the crucial error-correcting codes that would ensure the melody played flawlessly in the vacuum of space.

Following the launch of the Soviet Union’s Sputnik in 1957, which emitted a simple mechanical sound, Chinese scientists were inspired to pursue their ambitions in space. They were determined to launch a satellite capable of transmitting continuous signals, fueled by a desire for technological advancement and national pride.

Among various candidates, the song "Dongfanghong" emerged as the ideal choice for the satellite's transmission. However, the team faced unprecedented challenges in transmitting this beloved melody into space. Initially, they considered using magnetic tape, but the weight and complexity of this solution led them to abandon it.

In a moment of innovation, the research team turned to an aluminum plate piano, chosen for its clear and penetrating sound, making it an ideal medium for transmitting "Dongfanghong" into space. They meticulously designed a sound device to present the melody in its best form. However, ground tests revealed unexpected pitch alterations. This raised the crucial question of how to ensure the melody would be transmitted accurately over the long journey through space, directly linking to Chen’s task of error correction.

To ensure the successful transmission of "Dongfanghong," Chen diligently reviewed extensive foreign literature, leaving no details overlooked. Through relentless research and effort, he ultimately resolved the issues, laying a solid foundation for the flawless performance of the melody in space.

When the familiar tune was transmitted back to Earth, clear and accurate, it was not just a significant boost for China's space program but also a testament to the hard work and exceptional contributions of Chen Junliang and his team.

Chen's achievements extend far beyond this milestone. As a pioneer in programmable switching, he enabled millions of households to achieve communication accessibility. He also led the development of China’s first intelligent network system, significantly advancing the Internet of Things (IoT) in the country.

The IoT has transformed people’s lives by enhancing connectivity and optimizing resource allocation. Its concept emerged from a simple need to monitor coffee brewing, which led to innovations that laid the groundwork for IoT technologies. By 2009, IoT applications began to flourish across various sectors, including smart transportation, environmental monitoring, and healthcare.

Chen Junliang's tireless efforts have been instrumental in this integration. He chose to collaborate on a coal mine project to enhance safety through IoT technology, developing a monitoring system to protect miners' lives. Now in his seventies, he continues to lead projects, ensuring the safety of coal mining operations.

Chen Junliang’s profound sense of responsibility and exceptional contributions reflect his dedication to ensuring the safety of people's lives. His story inspires many to move forward courageously and take on responsibilities, serving as a powerful motivation for future generations.
