The Beijing Representative Office of the International Esports Committee (IEC) has officially been established in Chaoyang district, Beijing. It moved into the Cluster for the Headquarters of International Science and Technology Organizations. As the only legally registered representative office of an international esports organization currently operating in China, the launch of the IEC Beijing office also marks the city as one of the key global hubs for esports governance and industry development.
Founded in 2020 under a royal decree signed by the King of Belgium and headquartered in Brussels, the capital of the European Union, the IEC is an international non-governmental organization initiated by prominent international figures, including former UNESCO director-general Irina Bokova. The organization aims to support the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and promote the integration of esports with education, technology and culture.
Serving as the core operational arm for IEC activities in China, the Beijing office officially obtained its registration certificate in August 2025. Its business scope includes esports event authorization and management, academic research and standards development, education and training and talent exchange, digital asset protection, as well as international cooperation.
With the official launch of the Beijing office, the IEC will adopt a dual-headquarters structure of "Brussels (registered headquarters) — Beijing (operational headquarters)." According to the plan, the functions of the IEC Secretariat, including its Asia-Pacific division, will gradually relocate to the Beijing office, making Beijing a central hub for the organization's global operations.
IEC representatives said that following the opening of the Beijing office, the organization will move forward with initiatives such as global esports standards development, the promotion of green esports and international talent exchange programs. Plans are also underway to facilitate the hosting of top-tier international esports events and industry summits in Beijing.
The head of the IEC Beijing office noted that Beijing is at the forefront of the global digital economy and technological innovation, while Chaoyang district serves as an important hub for international exchange in the Chinese capital, offering strong location advantages and a well-developed industrial ecosystem. By locating in the Cluster for the Headquarters of International Science and Technology Organizations, the IEC aims to better advance international esports standards, promote green esports development and contribute to initiatives such as the Digital Silk Road.
The IEC China Committee (CEC) will also be based at the Beijing office. Focusing on academic research, public services and industry development, it plans to carry out initiatives including the development of esports big data systems, professional skills certification and industry standard arbitration, supporting the healthy and internationalized growth of China's esports industry.
Since 2023, Chaoyang district has continued to strengthen the development of the headquarters cluster, aiming to build a comprehensive platform for global science and technology organizations. The establishment of the IEC Beijing office is expected to bring new international innovation resources to the district and to Beijing's digital cultural industries. In the future, Chaoyang district will support the IEC in advancing standards development, expanding international exchanges and hosting major esports events, helping build a global hub for innovation in the esports industry.
