In 2024, the Beijing Association for Science and Technology supported 20 outstanding young engineer innovation studios in Beijing. Over the course of a year, these studios nurtured 221 young scientific and technological professionals, yielding 41 achievements, with project conversions generating economic benefits exceeding 53 million yuan.
These accomplishments primarily targeted real-world problem-solving. Zhao Nan, Chief Engineer of Beijing Benchmark Fangzhong Architectural Design Co., Ltd., is a prime example. The project led by him, a cross-disciplinary, cross-industry, and cross-institutional collaboration, was precisely the type of initiative encouraged by the youth innovation studios. Last year, this project received Class A support.
In simple terms, Zhao's project aims to develop foundational algorithms and leverage intelligent construction technology to "build houses like assembling cars," advancing the industrialization of architecture. So far, the team has filed five invention patent applications, with five core journal papers accepted for publication. Their research outcomes have been applied in multiple practical projects.
"These innovation studios not only support our research and production but also facilitate interdisciplinary technical exchanges and talent development, which sets them apart from other research funding programs," said Zhang Yifan, Deputy General Manager of China Electronics Sixth Research Institute Intelligent Systems Co., Ltd.
The studio spearheaded by Zhang developed an intelligent cabin for oil and gas field extraction, integrating video surveillance, security, and networking functions to provide robust support for remote operations. "The core components and software used in the cabin are domestically produced, achieving a high level of integration," he explained. "Previously, constructing such facilities took three to four months, but now it only takes three days, while also reducing costs and ensuring system stability. The industrialization process has also provided a practical platform for more young engineers."
These successes are just a snapshot. In 2024, the 20 supported youth innovation studio teams mentored 221 young professionals, secured 23 invention patents, implemented 41 innovative results, and developed 11 new products, materials, processes, and devices, generating over 53 million yuan in economic benefits.
