Recently, the ROPA6 Artificial Intelligence Integrated Orthopedic Surgical Robot (hereinafter referred to as "ROPA6") independently developed by Longwood Valley, an enterprise based in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (BDA, known as Beijing E-Town), has officially obtained the Class III Medical Device Registration Certificate from the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA). As the world's first AI-integrated orthopedic surgery robot platform registered in an integrated form, ROPA6 pioneers a design where one system adapts to six surgical procedures: hip, knee, unicondylar, spine, trauma and sports medicine. This milestone marks that domestic AI-enhanced orthopedic surgery robots have officially shifted from "single-procedure assistance" to "full-scenario platform-led development".

One System for Six Surgical Procedures Fills Technological Gap in AI Integrated Orthopedic Robots

With the accelerating aging of China's population, the prevalence of orthopedic diseases such as degenerative bone disorders, traumatic injuries and sports-related damages continues to rise, driving the rapid expansion of the orthopedic surgery robot market. However, most products on the market only support a single indication, creating numerous practical pain points for hospitals.

"ROPA stands for Robotic Physician Assistant, signifying an intelligent super assistant for surgeons. From the initial design stage, ROPA6 adopted a core development strategy of 'full orthopedics, full workflow and full intelligence', focusing on the hospital's real demand of covering core orthopedic surgeries with one device rather than merely pursuing technological breakthroughs for a single procedure," introduced a representative of Longwood Valley.

To this end, the team focused on tackling core technical challenges, including multi-scenario algorithm integration, multi-modal mechanical control and safety boundary definition for multiple indications, and finally launched ROPA6. The product integrates an AI-intelligent surgical planning system, a high-degree-of-freedom medical robotic arm system, and a navigator with higher precision and refresh rate, which can provide digitalized and personalized preoperative planning as well as high-precision, highly automated intraoperative implementation for six categories of surgeries: total hip, total knee, unicondylar, spine, trauma and sports medicine.

Clinically, the AI-intelligent surgical planning system only requires the patient's CT data to complete automatic 3D reconstruction, intelligent prosthesis matching and precise osteotomy scheme design within 5 to 10 minutes preoperatively, and fully presents the entire surgical process in 3D visualization, enabling surgeons to gain a clear understanding before operation.

Intraoperatively, relying on a sub-millimeter precision optical positioning system, navigators and follow-up technology, ROPA6 tracks the surgical trajectory in real time in an all-round manner, accurately captures subtle changes in the patient's intraoperative posture, and continuously calibrates the surgical path dynamically to achieve sub-millimeter precise positioning and osteotomy. The high-degree-of-freedom medical robotic arm system, combined with the "three-in-one" follow-up platform technology integrating the patient, robotic arm and operating table, realizes ultra-high-precision positioning and stable operation, effectively reducing the impact of manual hand tremors on surgical outcomes.

Open Platform-Compatible Design Precisely Meets Diverse Clinical Needs

While breaking through the technical barriers of six major orthopedic procedures, the open platform-compatible design adopted by ROPA6 eliminates the restriction of single-brand prostheses. It enables the technological advantage of deep integration of AI deep learning and high-end robotic control within one intelligent architecture to empower clinical applications on a broader scale and deliver tangible benefits to patients.

"ROPA6 is compatible with mainstream domestic and international prosthesis brands. Hospitals and surgeons can flexibly select the prosthesis type according to the patient's condition and clinical needs, maximizing the treatment outcomes for different patients while reducing the hospital's consumable procurement and inventory costs," noted a Longwood Valley representative. This design is intended to better adapt ROPA6 to the clinical usage habits of hospitals in different regions and at different levels, enhance the product's clinical universality and promotability, and lay a solid foundation for its subsequent deployment in hospitals at all levels nationwide.

In terms of application and promotion, ROPA6 has accumulated extensive clinical practice experience and market validation. Longwood Valley has always adhered to a clinical-oriented approach, and its core technical system has been fully verified through large-scale clinical practice, laying a solid foundation for the successful launch and wide application of ROPA6. Among them, its core procedures have covered thousands of hospitals across China, with hundreds of thousands of surgeries completed cumulatively, ranking among the industry leaders in surgical volume and coverage scale.

In this process, massive clinical surgical data have continuously fed into the optimization of AI models, forming a positive iteration closed loop of "clinical application – data accumulation – algorithm iteration – product upgrade – re-clinical application", which continuously improves the product's technical performance and clinical adaptability to better meet the demands of real surgical scenarios.

"Extensive clinical validation has fully proven that our AI orthopedic technology features high safety, high effectiveness and high popularization, and can steadily support the high-intensity daily surgical demands of hospitals at all levels. We believe that the approval and launch of ROPA6 will lead China's orthopedic diagnosis and treatment into a new era of full-scenario intelligent and precise therapy, help surgeons improve surgical quality and efficiency, and provide patients with higher-quality medical services," said the Longwood Valley representative.

Multi-Dimensional Empowerment by Beijing E-Town Safeguards Launch of High-End Medical Device

After seven years of refinement and the formation of a R&D team composed of talents in AI algorithms, precision machinery, clinical medicine and other fields, from technological development to market approval, ROPA6 not only reflects Longwood Valley's determination to solve clinical pain points in orthopedic surgery, but also represents the latest achievement of Beijing E-Town in strengthening the high-end medical device industrial cluster through multi-dimensional empowerment.

"The Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area has always taken optimizing the business environment as the core driver of high-quality development. With a first-class industrial ecosystem, targeted policy support, efficient and attentive enterprise services and complete factor guarantee, it has created a favorable environment for us to pursue development and innovation with peace of mind," introduced a Longwood Valley representative.

During the R&D breakthrough and achievement transformation of ROPA6, the BDA provided full-cycle accompanying services, special support for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry, and aggregated empowerment of innovative resources, which effectively reduced burdens and improved efficiency for the enterprise, strongly safeguarding the smooth market approval of this high-end innovative medical device.

With the approval of ROPA6, this high-end medical device born in Beijing E-Town is poised to set a benchmark for China's innovation in the global orthopedic surgery robot sector.

"In the future, Longwood Valley will continue to take AI technology as the core, continuously iterate product functions and performance, expand the scope of clinical indications, optimize the operating experience and after-sales service system, and promote the wide popularization of this high-end intelligent orthopedic equipment in hospitals at all levels, especially accelerating its penetration into the primary healthcare market. This will enable more primary patients to access precise, safe and efficient intelligent surgical services locally, effectively alleviating their medical suffering and economic burden," stated the Longwood Valley representative.

"Standing at a new starting point of high-quality medical development, Longwood Valley will continue to build an integrated intelligent orthopedic diagnosis and treatment platform, helping China's orthopedic medicine advance to the global frontier."
